Any one of a large group of lipids including a characteristic chemical arrangement of four carbon rings known as a steroid nucleus. Cholesterol is the most abundant steroid in animal tissues. Other steroids present in the body are derived from cholesterol, including the bile acids, vitamin D, and the sex hormones, such as estrogen and testosterone.
