An abnormal or artificial passage or communication from one internal organ to another or leading from an internal organ to the surface of the body. Enterocutaneous fistulas most frequently appear secondary to abdominal surgery but may also be a consequence of inflammatory bowel disease, malignancy, radiation, and trauma. A fistula may also be created intentionally in certain circumstances.
